This 1997 Volkswagen Beetle 1600i is a fuel-injected Mexican-market example finished in its original and rarely seen Dusty Pearl Mauve (LC5P) over a grey interior. Showing 96,160 km, it is powered by a 1584cc air-cooled flat-four producing 46 horsepower and paired with a 4-speed manual transmission. The car was purchased in Barcelona from its original owner and has been part of the seller’s personal collection for the past two years. Not equipped with air conditioning, it is offered with extensive documentation, original parts, and a recent engine overhaul.
Originally delivered new in Spain, this Beetle benefited from a mild climate and careful ownership. The seller notes that it was never driven in winter, never exposed to road salt, and rarely left outside in the rain. The body and chassis remain dry, straight, and rust-free, with no previous welding or undercoating treatments. Its factory paint, while showing scratches, dents, and parking wear consistent with age—including key damage on the passenger side—remains largely intact. The front and rear bumpers have scrapes from tight Spanish parking; the rear bumper will need replacement, and a correct used 1600i bumper is included. BRM Speedwell alloy wheels (4.5J front, 5.5J rear) wear new 2024 tires, and the original steel wheels with hubcaps accompany the sale.
The grey cabin remains entirely original, with clean, undamaged seats, headliner, and carpeting. An Empi long-shift lever is installed for smoother operation, though the original lever is included. A period Sony radio, rear speakers, and original electrics remain functional. The dashboard houses a set of VDO auxiliary gauges installed by the previous owner—engine temperature, oil pressure, voltage, clock, and a tachometer—all in working order. The car was originally fitted with Cibie front fog lamps; although currently removed, they are included, with one lens cracked. NOS rear fog lights accompany the sale.
At 96k km, the seller elected to have the engine completely rebuilt in 2024 due to exhaust valve issues. The overhaul included new cylinder heads, valves, pistons, rings, flywheel, clutch, and alternator, along with repairs to the thermostat system and part of the wiring harness. Detailed photos of the work are available. The original heat exchangers and exhaust system remain in place. The front axle was also rebuilt, and the adjustable front beam—with factory front disc brakes—remains in good order. The steering gear was refurbished using a NOS repair kit. Additional maintenance includes new brake lines, a new Varta battery, and the new tire set installed this year.
The seller reports that the Beetle drives very well and has been used on multiple long trips over the summer. The brakes are reliable, the heater works as intended, and the car is suitable for regular use. While the body shows cosmetic imperfections, the mechanical condition is described as excellent following the extensive recent work.
