This 1970 Porsche 914 is finished in Silver over a black Ambla and cloth interior, showing 156,548 miles. Built on the morning of Thursday 12 November 1970, the 13th 914 completed that day, it was a left-hand-drive special order with Minilite wheels and a limited-slip differential, supplied in the United States for Porsche Club of America competition. In 2022 the seller reports the original four-cylinder engine was replaced with a rebuilt period 2.7-litre flat-six, in essence recreating the 914-6, paired with a five-speed dog-leg gearbox. It is now offered by Open Air Imports in Cranfield, England, with a detailed history from the very day of production and a 25-photo gallery.
The Silver paintwork replaced the car's original black during a partial restoration after it came to the UK in 1993, and the paintwork and bodywork were sympathetically restored again in 2011, keeping the original bodyshell as unmolested as possible. It rides on 6-inch Minilite alloy wheels with Toyo Proxes R tyres, with Porsche side graphics, a removable FRP roof and a replica works exhaust.
The cabin is trimmed in black Ambla and cloth, with a Torino RS90 rally seat, a fire extinguisher system and a radio. The seller describes the car as brilliant for touring or classic road rallying.
The rebuilt period (1973) 2.7-litre flat-six was fitted in 2022 in a conversion commissioned by the present owner from Porsche 914 specialist Greatworth Classics. Specification includes triple Weber carburettors, electronic ignition and CDI, Porsche 911 running gear, uprated brake discs, Bilstein suspension, extra-strong custom driveshafts, a steel billet flywheel and a high-performance starter motor. The limited-slip differential was rebuilt in 2000 by Gantspeed.
The car's competition record is documented from new: a class win at the Porsche Club USA Hill Climb in 1971, third on the Sawtooth Rally, second in the Chesapeake Challenge Rally, and a class win at the 1972 Porsche Parade, finishing seventh overall and winning the Hoffman Parade Cup. It has been featured in magazine articles since 2000, most recently in Classic Porsche Magazine in July 2024.
The 914 was the joint Volkswagen-Porsche mid-engined two-seater built from 1969 to 1976. Six-cylinder 914-6s were always the rarest of the range, and this car's conversion follows that template with a period flat-six in a shell with genuine period competition history.
