This 1997 Volkswagen Golf, finished in sleek black on both the exterior and interior, boasts 115,368 miles and is equipped with a 2.0 16V engine paired with a manual transmission. Originally a 1.6GL model with 107,000 miles, it was inherited from my grandfather, who had owned it since 2009. As someone who always maintained the car for him, I undertook a complete conversion, transforming it into a 2.0 16V ABF with all the features of a GTI 16V, including 5x100 bolt pattern and disc brakes all around.
The engine, showing an accurate 115,000 miles, is matched by clocks from the donor car. Recently, I reverted the car to coilovers after selling the airlift setup. It now runs on 17” Porsche Cup Rep wheels, refinished in white and sealed with Gtechniq C5, which have not seen the road since their refurbishment. These 5x130 wheels (7.5j front, 9j rear) are fitted with appropriate spacers due to their high offset.
The body shell is impressively rot-free, having always been garaged during my grandfather's ownership. However, there are small blisters on both front doors by the window scraper seal, likely due to trapped moisture. The car features genuine VOTEX bumper extensions, a rare find, with a small crack on the front lip's corner. Inside, the Recaro GTI interior is in excellent condition, complemented by custom blue seatbelts, a custom gear knob, and a Momo 280mm steering wheel. The stock engine and gearbox are paired with a Jetex stainless exhaust from the cat-back and a 4-branch stainless manifold.
Additional features include smoked heckblende, Porsche Cayenne front brakes with 323mm discs (Leon Cupra R), and HEL braided lines. The US spec center console has been modified to fit the UK front section, and the tailgate has been de-wipered. The front scuttle trims remain undamaged.
There are minor issues to note: slight surface rust on the driver's side door and passenger door near the scraper seal, a small chip on the left rear door, and the front edge of the headlining coming slightly unstuck. The left rear tail light has a slight split, and the front splitter has a small crack on the left corner, previously repaired but still noticeable.
Overall, this 1997 Volkswagen Golf is a well-maintained and thoughtfully upgraded vehicle, with a unique blend of classic charm and modern performance. It’s an excellent opportunity for any Volkswagen enthusiast looking for a distinctive and capable car
