This 1989 Volkswagen Golf GTI Mk2 is finished in Atlas Grey Metallic over a G60 grey interior and shows 158,300 kilometers. Powered by the original 1.8-liter Digifant-injected inline-four paired with a manual transmission, this example is not equipped with air conditioning and has been comprehensively restored with significant mechanical and cosmetic work completed. The car is HPI clear and has covered fewer than 500 miles since the restoration was finished.
The body was stripped for a full glass-out respray, with all panels and glazing removed to ensure a high-quality finish. During this process, the rear inner and outer arches were replaced using Heritage panels, and the sills were renewed where required, resulting in a solid and well-presented shell. The exterior is further enhanced by a genuine BBS body kit, refurbished Borbet alloy wheels wrapped in new Toyo tires, and period-style details including a four-bar grille, smoked indicators, and crosshair headlights. The overall presentation is described as straight and clean, with a deep finish consistent with the level of work carried out.
Inside, the cabin has been retrimmed by MJ Trimmers in a cohesive OEM-plus style. The dashboard and interior trims have been hand-stitched in leather, while electric front seats sourced from an Audi S3 have been retrimmed to match. Rallye-style door cards, a new headliner, and a replacement sunroof seal complete the refreshed interior, which blends modern touches with period-correct aesthetics.
The chassis and suspension have also received extensive attention. The rear axle was removed, refurbished, and treated, with new bushes installed, while the front suspension benefits from new arms and drop links. The CV joints have been rebuilt with new boots, and the braking system has been refreshed with new lines, discs, and pads. FK coilovers are fitted, along with rear camber shims to fine-tune stance and handling.
Mechanically, the 1.8-liter Digifant engine has been maintained with a cambelt replacement, full service including fluids, spark plugs, and HT leads, as well as new cooling components such as the expansion tank. Additional work includes a new heater matrix with refreshed flap seals and a new gear linkage. The engine is reported to start easily, run smoothly, and pull strongly, with the gearbox operating in excellent condition.
Additional features include an alarm system and central locking, while manual windows preserve the classic Mk2 driving experience. The car is accompanied by a substantial history file, including a fully stamped service book prior to current ownership and numerous receipts documenting recent investment.
