This 1987 Volkswagen Golf GTI 16V is a factory-original 16-valve example finished in Tornado Red (LY3D) over a grey fabric interior. First registered in Germany, this Mk2 GTI remained with its original owner for nearly 25 years before passing through two subsequent owners and finally being deregistered in July 2025. Showing 135,000 kilometers, the car retains 85% of its original paint, its original 16V drivetrain, German paperwork, and a remarkably complete portfolio of service records and documents dating back to new. It is equipped with a 1.8-liter 16-valve engine paired with a 5-speed manual transmission and is not fitted with air conditioning.
The Tornado Red exterior presents largely in its original finish, with only select panels—namely the driver-side front fender, driver’s door, and lower rear panel beneath the tailgate—professionally repainted for color matching. The car retains its correct GTI 16V visual cues, including the dual-headlight grille, factory wheel-arch extensions, original GTI badging, and the model-correct roof spoiler. As a German-market example, it is accompanied by both original registration documents, the owner’s manual, service booklet, two original keys, and a comprehensive binder of invoices, history records, and Volkswagen dealer documentation.
The interior is finished in grey fabric with the sporty bolstered seats specific to the 16V. A notable highlight is the factory Digifiz digital instrument cluster, which was replaced with a brand-new unit at 117,252 kilometers, a common upgrade among period enthusiasts and an increasingly collectible Mk2 detail. The cabin features a black headliner and matching black A-, B-, and C-pillars, the original GTI steering wheel, an onboard computer, and the MFA multi-function display. The parcel shelf remains intact and free of aftermarket speaker cutouts, contributing to the car’s well-preserved and authentic presentation.
This GTI has been extensively maintained throughout its life, with a deep and well-documented service history. Major preventative work completed in September 2024 included replacement of the timing belt, tensioner, and water pump, as well as new injectors, manifold gasket, distributor, spark plugs, starter motor, fuel pumps, filters, and fresh fluids. In October 2025, additional service was carried out consisting of an oil and filter change, new air filter, spark plugs, brake fluid flush, and new front and rear wiper blades. Earlier Volkswagen dealer records from 2012 through 2020 detail regular maintenance, alignment work, fuel system service, brake jobs, suspension replacement, clutch and control arm renewal, and more, forming an unusually thorough maintenance chronology.
