This 1965 Mercedes-Benz 230 SL is finished in white over a light blue leather interior, showing 24,000 km. It was first registered on 17 February 1965 in Bassano del Grappa, in the province of Vicenza, and has spent its whole life in that area with four owners. The car still wears its original black Vicenza plates, and the first registration document and green booklet survive. It is now offered by Open Air Imports with a 30-photo gallery.
The white paintwork is factory original in colour, over body panels the seller describes as original. A blue soft top and a hard top accompany the car. The third owner, a local collector who bought the car in 1998, registered it with ASI and began a conservative restoration of the interior and bodywork, photographed on the dealer's site, keeping as much originality as possible. The seller discloses small signs of time on the car, consistent with a partly preserved interior and original panels, and no major defects.
The light blue leather interior is partly preserved from new. ASI Targa Oro homologation was awarded in 2000, entry in the national historic register followed in 2002, and a FIVA identity card was issued in 2003.
The 2,306 cc inline-six is rated at 150 hp and is paired with a four-speed manual gearbox. The fourth owner, since 2006, has kept the car garaged with all biennial inspections carried out and maintenance invoiced, according to the seller. The seller's page lists the displacement as 2,281 cc in its technical table and 2,306 cc in the text; the higher figure is the correct specification for the 230 SL's M127 engine.
The W113 was the first SL built around a safety structure, with a rigid passenger cell and crumple zones, and its concave hardtop roof gave the model the Pagoda nickname that has stayed with it since. Italian-delivered cars that keep their first plates, first documents and a single-city life are the exception rather than the rule.
