  • This Mercedes-Benz 220 S Cabriolet was built in 1958 and first registered in July 1958 in Canton Ticino, Switzerland, showing 82,000 km. It was sold new through the official Mercedes-Benz importer in Zurich to an engineer named Ballabio and maintained by a Mercedes-Benz dealer in Lugano, covering only 17,200 km by 1968. The dealer's page titles the car as a 1959; its own text dates the build and first registration to 1958, and that earlier date is used here. It is now offered by Open Air Imports with a 30-photo gallery.

The two-tone bronze and gold paintwork is the car's original colour combination, renewed in a repaint under the last owner, who also commissioned a new beige fabric soft top made to factory specification. The car was imported into Italy in 1984 and registered in Padua, keeping the plates from that first Italian registration. One Padua owner, a member of the international Mercedes-Benz register, obtained official register badge number 695, which remains on the grille.

The red leather interior, dashboard wood and Becker Mexico radio are original, according to the seller. All handbooks and the spare parts catalogue survive, and a large history file accompanies the car. ASI Targa Oro homologation was awarded in 2009. The seller states that the chassis, body and engine numbers match.

The 2.2-litre inline-six runs on twin Solex carburettors and is rated at 106 hp, paired with a four-speed manual gearbox. Three collector owners followed the car in the Padua area after its Italian registration, the last since 2006. The seller discloses no specific defects; as with all of the dealer's vintage stock, the car is offered under standard vintage-car terms, sold as seen consistent with its age and mileage.

The W180 220 S was the flagship of the Ponton range, and the Cabriolet was its most expensive catalogue model, built in small numbers alongside the Coupé with extensive hand finishing, leather and wood throughout.
